Description:
Kashi, the sacred city, is not just the abode of Shiva but also a city that encompasses a vast pantheon of Gods and Goddesses. The city is intricately linked to the concept of the mandala, a sacred geometric design representing the universe, its powers, interrelations, and its divine center. The mandala’s radius extends to a distance of five Kroshas, approximately ten miles, with its borders guarded by a multitude of deities. The Panchkroshi Yatra, or “Pilgrimage of the Five Kroshas,” honors this sacred circle by circumambulating it, similar to how devotees honor deities by circumambulating the sanctum of temples.
The Panchkroshi Yatra features 108 sacred “stations” along its route, including prominent Shiva and Devi temples, as well as wayside shrines dedicated to Ganesha, Ganas, and Bhairavas. Pilgrims often complete the yatra on foot over five days, making stopovers at various spots. Alternatively, many choose to undertake the yatra by taxi, completing it in a single day.
